8 tuff miles 2013

It's a rough start to a Sunday morning at Maho today, as all of us that were a part of the 17th annual 8 Tuff Miles race attempt to recover. Almost 1,500 people were registered for the race, and Maho had quite the representation. All totaled there were about 60 guests and staff that woke up before 6am to either race or volunteer. The guest taxi left at about 6:15am with close to 30 guests getting a ride into Cruz Bay. The staff truck and cars for those running totaled 15 as we left just before 6:30am. Then at close to 6:45am the Maho water station crew, 12 people strong, took off in cars and the big Maho dump truck full of supplies. Not included are however many other guests from Maho drove their personal cars to Cruz Bay to race or Coral Bay to volunteer.

Needless to say, it was a quiet night at Maho last night as we all were exhausted from the event. For those that missed it this year, there's always next year! But register early, and I guess it wouldn't hurt to start your training early........like this week!

Monday Feb 11, Tuesday 12th , Thursday 14th, Friday 15th and Saturday 16th. Meets 9-2PM with Ara

demonstrating and teaching. The rest of the day is open studio for participants.

  

You may take classes by the day or the whole 5 day week  $75. for One Day. Two Days $130. Three Days $190. Four Days $250.  $300. for the entire 5 day week. Lunch is included each day or bring your own. We are taking off Wednesday to allow for an open studio session from 9AM-12PM which is included in the class. Also that allows for some weekend people to participate on Friday and Saturday. A Pot Luck Barbecue and Bonfire is planned for Sunday night 2/17 at Kaye Thomas'  home and studio on the road to Francis Bay.

 

Ara has taught many times at the Clay Works and is a really fun and fabulous teacher.He is a 3rd generation English potter whose father , Seth and grandfather Michael are renowned potters in the English slipware tradition. He shares tricks for throwing large and fast with bold and fluid slip design, while entertaining us with “English flavored” storytelling. His many years as a production potter in England and the U.S. are obvious in the ease of his fast and masterful throwing. His perceptive teaching style  will help you advance your skills

  

Clay  will be available at a special workshop rate of $25. per 25# bag which includes a $75. firing fee credit on your studio card.  A 12# bag will cost $12. and comes with a $35. firing fee credit.

We know everyone is waiting for "new news" about the sale of the land, but we don't have any. Should anything new develop we'll certainly keep everyone updated. In the meantime it's been a very typical kind of season here at Maho, with plenty of happy guests enjoying a place they once enjoyed years ago or perhaps discovered just recently. We've still had many "newbies" to Maho this year, but boy have there been a lot of repeat guests and familiar faces from years past around camp lately. The general mood and attitude around camp has been very upbeat and positive as all our guests seem to be visiting, enjoying, and making the most of their last vacation to Maho.

Speaking of happy guests, it's hard to tell who's more excited in this picture: the guest or the Bananaquits in his hand! If you're here this season then come up to the Kitchen/D Bath area around 8-9am and try yourself, it will certainly put a smile on your face.
